Consider the influence of noise in your genetic makeup. Every one of the zillion cells in your body carries twenty-three pairs of chromo-somes. One chromosome of each pair came from your mother (more precisely, it is a copy of one supplied by your mother) and one from your father. When your mother made the egg with your name on it, she donated to it twenty-three of her chromosomes. When your father made the sperm cell destined to fertilize your egg, he did the same. And how did they choose which chromosome of each pair to give you? Well, they didn't: it was decided randomly, by molecular noise.
